Basement conversions

Basement conversions are a great way to add extra space to homes and business premises, increasing the number of usable rooms and opening up options for living, working, sleeping, playing and more.

Whatever the intended use, underground spaces rarely have any windows and, therefore, no natural light. Some properties are equipped with light wells but even then, natural light is at a premium.

Extensions and basement conversions occasionally benefit from some natural illumination courtesy of small windows or light wells, but such light normally drops off 25% – 30% beyond the window, with the natural angle meaning the floor is the only area that is lit and the rest of the room remains dark.

It’s no surprise that most basements require an immediate lighting solution, with many property owners opting for conventional ‘switched’ systems. UK-based Limitless Ltd, however, offer bespoke alternatives specifically designed for basements, which channel natural light and project it deep into the underground space.

“There are plenty of creative artificial lighting systems available for basement conversions, but nothing compares to real daylight”, explains Limitless’ co-founder and Director, Graham Jacobs.

“We offer a range of natural light systems to channel daylight into basements, cellars or unlit and windowless rooms. The results are quite spectacular, transforming underground living spaces, and bringing genuine benefits to the inhabitants. Not only is natural light good for you; it doesn’t cost the earth!”

Benefits of natural light

The benefits of natural light in homes and offices are vast, improving:

  • Health and well-being
  • Learning and information retention
  • Concentration and productivity
  • Energy saving
  • Usable space
  • Property value

“The British Standards Institution (BSI) has issued BS 8206 part 2 – a recommendatory code of practice for daylight in buildings, often referred to with planning applications”, Graham continues.

“Considering how much time we spend indoors, if part of that time is spent below ground the importance of natural light is undeniable. Our Basement Light Shaft fully complies with the BSI regulations.”

Increase in property value

Adding a usable basement room or extension to a house increases the footprint of the property, giving it an immediate value boost that can be bolstered by the presence of natural light.

“If a below-ground space is filled with natural light, is energy efficient and highly usable, the overall value of the property is sure to rise”, Graham explains. “Many of our customers have seen the value of their home increase dramatically since having our systems installed, showing how basements deserve just as much attention as the rest of the house. What’s more, the investment made to bring natural light into a basement or cellar can be reclaimed when it comes to selling the property!”
